Bethesda Help is run entirely by a team of extremely capable and loyal volunteers, including individuals, families, businesses, scouts, schools, church groups, and community and professional organizations. Volunteers may work directly within Bethesda Help or by organizing food drives and other donation activities.

Volunteer Positions Currently Available—Officers of the Day and Drivers

Bethesda Help provides training for all volunteer positions and accommodates each volunteer’s schedule and availability. Volunteers usually work one day a month, but we have many who choose
to work less frequently as substitutes. All volunteers work out of their own homes.

*Officers of the Day: Bethesda Help has a dedicated phone number (301-365-2022) that social workers and needy potential clients call to request assistance. The phone line is handled by a professional answering service. Calls are forwarded to the Bethesda Help telephone officer, who
in turn, speaks with the individual about the particular need request. When a case involves financial assistance, the telephone officer verifies a client’s need with follow-up phone calls to social workers, service providers, and anyone else involved in the case.

Financial aid is always paid directly to the service provider after careful screening by the telephone officer and a volunteer financial consultant. Most aid requests are processed in 24 to 48 hours. The telephone officer also arranges for volunteer drivers to transport clients and/or deliver food bags.

* Drivers: Drivers pick up clients at their homes, and ensure they make it safely into their doctor’s or social worker’s office and back to their homes. Drivers also pick up food from our food closet and deliver it to the clients at home. Food is usually delivered the same day that it is requested.

Continuing Volunteer Opportunity—Collect Food for Our Food Closet

The Bethesda Help food closet is housed in the North Bethesda United Methodist Church on Old Georgetown Road. Here, our volunteer drivers pick up grocery bags of food (a three-day supply for
each member of the household) and deliver the food to the client’s home.

We need a well-stocked food closet to provide this vital community service, and food drives are wonderful way to keep the closet filled with supplies. Please remember to check expiration dates before donating food as Bethesda Help cannot accept expired food items.

*Food Drives: Foods drives can be organized by just about any group—a school, business, congregation, or other type of service organization. Food drives can be held any time of the year and can target a specific food: a peanut-butter-and-jelly drive at the beginning of the school year, for example, or a canned-soup drive during the winter months. Many groups that hold monthly food collections for Bethesda Help specify a different food from our food donation list for each month. For information on organizing a food drive, or information on delivering food to the closet, please contact Julie Black, Food Closet Coordinator at 301-365-2022 or bethesdahelp@yahoo.com
